Name: Abigail Strate
CAN Fund #150Women Recipient
Nickname: Abi
Hometown: Calgary, AB
Sport: Ski Jumping
What do you love about your sport?
I love the adrenaline rush of a good jump. As soon as you leave the take-off, you can immediately feel the quality of a jump, and the excitement of landing a deep jump (although it usually takes a moment to fully register) is one that never gets old!
Why are you proud to be Canadian?
I am proud to be Canadian because of our international reputation as being kind, friendly and welcoming. The other nations seem to gravitate towards our constant smiling energy, and I feel very fortunate to be able to make friends so easily all across the world.
Advice you’d give your younger self?
Try not to worry about the things that are out of your control—go with the flow and focus your energy towards things that will positively impact your performance.
What does being a CAN Fund #150Women recipient allow you to do?
Although travelling the world doing something you love seems like the dream for most that follow my journey—it comes with many stresses. Along with the stress of living out of a suitcase and moving to a different country every 4 days while juggling training and school, the financial stress associated with international flights, accommodations, and high performance sport sometimes make it difficult to appreciate the wonderful life I have the privilege of living. CAN Fund helps by alleviating some of the financial burden; lifting the fog of stress and allowing me to focus my energy towards my training, while appreciating the special life my sport has provided me with.
