Name: Rebecca Johnston

Hometown: Sudbury ON
Nickname: Becca or Johnny
Favourite Sports Memory: My favorite memory would have to have been when we won the Olympic gold medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. It’s been a dream of mine to play in the Olympics one day and compete for my nation. I will never forget getting that gold medal around my neck.
How you got involved in your sport: I grew up playing hockey with my brothers and sisters. I am from a large family and we all played hockey at a high level. My father played when he was younger and I just followed what all my siblings were doing. I looked up to my brothers and sister so I wanted to play hockey just like them.
The moment you knew you wanted to represent Canada: When I watched the men’s and women’s Canadian hockey teams win gold in the 2002 Olympics. I was so inspired to watch the athletes do anything they could to win for their nation. I knew I wanted to feel the way all those athletes felt once they had accomplished what they have been working their entire lives for.
Favourite Quote: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” ~ Wayne Gretzky
CAN Fund Testimonial: CAN Fund has helped me so much throughout my athletic career: I spend most of my days training and travelling to my hockey games, that it is impossible to get a full time job to help pay for my everyday expenses. CAN Fund has allowed me to focus on improving on the ice by enabling me to spend more time working on my development as a player. I want to be the best player I can be for my Country and CAN Fund has allowed me to accomplish this.

Share one valuable tool that you use on a daily basis that helps you to be the best athlete you can be: Dedication and hard work, to do the best job I can in any situation. I think this transfers to the ice as well. I always want to get better and do better next time. I am never satisfied with my performance. There are always improvements and changes that need to be made to my game. I guess I can say I’m a perfectionist on the ice.
Who is one person in your life that has impacted your career and what was it that they taught you: My father for me has greatly impacted where I am today. I could not have achieved what I have if it wasn’t for him. He has invested so much time and effort into helping me become the player I am today. He has taught me how to be disciplined and dedicated in sport and in everyday life. But most importantly he believed in me and my ability to accomplish my goal, which was to represent my country.
