FAQ

For over 15 years CAN Fund has been helping great talent become world class and has supported hundreds of athletes who have proudly represented Canada at World Championships and Summer and Winter Games from Sydney to PyeongChang.  CAN Fund is a leading catalyst in giving our athletes what they need to succeed on the world stage.  Your donation provides our athletes with the opportunity to train and compete on a level playing field for Canada.  Becoming world class requires great financial commitment and with consistent support from CAN Fund our athletes will achieve excellence. With every donation to CAN Fund you find out the name of the athlete supported and receive a tax receipt.

Do people really know the impact they have on our lives? The CAN Fund Impact Campaign “Celebrate Impact, Impact Success” is creating a unique opportunity to share the impact people have on each other. Think of someone in your life who has inspired you, believed in you, supported you, and in doing so has made a significant difference. At CAN Fund we want Canadians from coast to coast to celebrate the people who have impacted their lives through our meaningful Impact Campaign “Celebrate Impact, Impact Success.”

The donor makes a contribution to CAN Fund in celebration of their Impact Person and shares 3 words that embody who their Impact person is to them. These 3 words are featured on a CAN Fund Original 3 Words Painting by artist Jane Roos and is sent to the Impact Person in the mail from CAN Fund on the donors behalf. Both the donor and the Impact Person find out the name and sport of the athlete supported. A portion of the donation receives a tax receipt. Impact Campaign

Canadian athletes face a funding shortfall and rely on CAN Fund to help close the funding gap.  CAN Fund has raised over $40 million to date and supported thousands of athletes from coast to coast.  Since Athens, 2004 to the recent PyeongChang, 2018 Games CAN Fund has proudly supported 80% of the athletes who competed for Canada.  As funds are raised funds are distributed to successful applicants on a continuous basis.  Each application CAN Fund begins at $0 and works to raise as much funding as possible for the most recent group of applicants.  The number of athletes that can be supported each application depends on the funds raised.

Twice a year summer, winter, able bodied and Paralympic athletes representing Canada at the international level are eligible to apply to CAN Fund.  The application deadlines and forms are available on our website during the application submission period.  Athletes are able to apply to CAN Fund via online submission or can mail their applications directly to CAN Fund.  The application is distributed through the following channels:  NSO’s, CAN Fund Athlete Reps, Athletes CAN, CAN Fund Social Media Outlets and the CAN Fund Athlete Database. Athlete Application

Our goal is always to support as many athletes as possible but the number of athletes we are able to support each application all depends on the funds we raise. Each application is reviewed by the Canadian Athletes Now Fund Athlete Selection Committee and evaluated on a criteria approved by the CAN Fund Board of Directors.  Based on the monies raised CAN Fund disperses the funds directly to as many athletes as possible.  If an athlete is successful in becoming a CAN Fund recipient they receive $6,000.  Because CAN Fund offers 2 applications per year an athlete is eligible to receive $12,000 annually ($6,000 per application).

Canada as a country benefits from this fund in several ways. Our athletes are incredible role models — especially for our youth — they act as ambassadors to our country, and with consistent financial support, these athletes can continue inspiring future generations of proud Canadians. Perhaps Scott Russell, CBC Sports Commentator/Hockey Night In Canada puts it best: “The Canadian Athletes Now Fund is making a difference. It’s the unseen hand in the grandstand which will help Canadian athletes live their dreams at the Olympics. The contribution we make to the efforts of those who will wear the maple leaf, is an investment in the national pride we so often take for granted. These athletes deserve our support, our good wishes and our financial backing. When they compete they make us all proud, and as a passionate fan of sport in this country, I’m delighted to endorse the Canadian Athletes Now Fund.”

The Canadian Athletes Now Fund was established in 1997 to help send athletes to Sydney in 2000.  CAN Fund has directly impacted the lives of hundreds of Canadian athletes enabling them to follow their world class dreams.  CAN Fund also engages proud Canadians from coast to coast to invest in potential and become a part of an athlete’s journey.
